SI-VIS: The Sound of Heroes – Season 1 Episode 1 Review: When Music Meets Magic
If you’ve been scrolling through anime hype lists lately, you’ve probably seen SI-VIS: The Sound of Heroes popping up everywhere. This original series from Aniplex and Sony Music Entertainment Japan (animated by Studio VOLN) dropped its first episode on October 5, and let’s just say it’s not your average music anime.
First off, let’s talk about the vibes. The show centers on Minami Kyoya, a kid with big dreams of joining SI-VIS—a global music sensation led by the charismatic YOSUKE (voiced by Daisuke Namikawa). But here’s the twist: SI-VIS isn’t just a band. They’re secret heroes using “Mirage,” a mysterious power that turns crowd energy into battle strength during their concerts. Yeah, you read that right. Imagine BTS meets My Hero Academia, but with way more guitar riffs and neon lights.
The first episode kicks off with SI-VIS’s opening concert, and wow—Studio VOLN did not hold back. The animation is sleek, with dynamic camera angles that make you feel like you’re front row at a stadium show. The music, composed by Shuhei Mutsuki, is a bop too. The opening track “Echoes of Mirage” has this catchy pop-rock beat that’s been stuck in my head since I watched it. Fans on Twitter are already raving about the choreography—apparently, the dance scenes took months to animate. One user even said, “I rewatched the concert scene three times just for the guitar solo.”
But it’s not all glitter and confetti. Minami’s journey is where the heart of the story lies. He’s this awkward but determined kid who can’t sing to save his life (relatable), but he’s got a hidden talent for playing the piano. When he stumbles upon SI-VIS’s secret training session, he accidentally activates Mirage and almost destroys a practice room. Oops. The scene where YOSUKE catches him is tense—you can feel Minami’s fear of being rejected, but also his burning desire to belong.
What’s cool is how the show blends music and action seamlessly. During the concert, when a “Noise” (the series’ version of villains) attacks, SI-VIS switches from performing to fighting without missing a beat. The crowd thinks it’s part of the show, but we see the members using their instruments as weapons—YOSUKE’s microphone shoots energy blasts, and the bassist’s guitar turns into a shield. It’s over-the-top, but in the best way possible.
Of course, no first episode is perfect. Some fans on MyAnimeList pointed out that the pacing feels a bit rushed. We get introduced to a lot of characters (like the rest of SI-VIS’s members) in a short time, and their backstories are barely touched on. But honestly, that’s a minor gripe. The episode does a great job of setting up the world and leaving you wanting more. I need to know why Mirage exists, what Minami’s connection to it is, and whether he’ll actually make the cut to join SI-VIS.
Another thing I loved is the diversity of the cast. SI-VIS is a co-ed group with members from different backgrounds, which is refreshing to see in an anime. The voice acting is top-notch too—Ayane Sakura (as the band’s vocalist, Hana) has this powerful voice that gives me chills, and Nobunaga Shimazaki (Minami) nails the awkward teen vibe without being cringey.
Overall, SI-VIS: The Sound of Heroes Episode 1 is a solid start. It’s got everything: great music, stunning animation, and a unique premise that sets it apart from other music anime. If you’re into shows that mix heart, humor, and high-energy action, this one’s for you. Just be warned—you might end up adding the soundtrack to your playlist.
Final thought: I can’t wait to see how Minami grows as a character. Will he learn to control Mirage? Can he overcome his insecurities and become a hero? Only time will tell, but for now, I’m hooked.
Rating: 8/10 – A rockin’ start with lots of potential.
P.S. The ending credits have a piano version of “Echoes of Mirage” that’s so beautiful it made me tear up. Don’t skip it!
