“The Banished Court Magician Aims to Become the Strongest” First Impressions: Cliche Done… Well Enough?
Let’s cut straight to it: if you’ve seen Banished from the Hero’s Party or Mushoku Tensei’s early rejection arcs, you know exactly what you’re getting with Mikata ga Yowasugite Hojo Mahou ni Tesshiteita Kyuutei Mahoushi, Tsuihou sarete Saikyou wo Mezashimasu (let’s just call it Mikata for short). The first episode hits every beat of the “overpowered nice guy gets kicked out of his party for being ‘useless’” trope so hard, you’d think it was following a checklist. But here’s the thing: sometimes, even a cliche can be… watchable?
The setup is textbook: Alec Ygret, a court magician trained by the legendary Eldas, is part of Prince Regulus Galdana’s party. But instead of showing off his badass attack magic (which we see in flashbacks—dude can summon lava snakes!), he’s stuck as the group’s healer/supporter. Cue the prince and his crew (read: arrogant blonde and his yes-men) calling Alec “weak” and booting him out. Shocker, right?
Fans on MyAnimeList are split—hard. One user ranted, “It’s surreal seeing these shows that are exact copies of each other. Wouldn’t the creators be embarrassed?” Another called it “peak shoelacer” (a term for generic fantasy). But here’s the twist: some people like the shoelace. As one commenter put it, “No one’s forcing you to watch. We all have different tastes.” Fair enough—if you’re into “revenge of the underdog” stories, this is catnip.
Let’s talk about the good stuff first. The animation? Slightly above average, according to viewers. The magic effects—like Alec’s fire spells—look crisp, and the fight scenes (though brief) have energy. Yorha, Alec’s new party member, is a standout: she’s competent, funny, and doesn’t just exist to fawn over the MC. “How cute (and competent) is Yorha?” one fan gushed. “The way she annihilated that sandwich :)” Small wins, but wins nonetheless.
But the bad? Oh, it’s bad. The pacing is rushed—Alec gets banished in the first 10 minutes, and his new party forms by the end like it’s no big deal. The characters are paper-thin: Prince Regulus is the same “arrogant pretty boy” we’ve seen 100 times, and Alec’s old party members are just there to be mean. “Why didn’t he just fire off a lava snake and shut them up?” a user asked. Exactly—Alec’s passivity is frustrating, even if it’s for plot reasons.
The biggest sin? Lack of originality. “Ever since Shield Hero, everybody’s underappreciated and betrayed,” another fan complained. “Just stop already.” It’s true—Mikata doesn’t bring anything new to the table. The “banished from the party” trope is so overdone, it’s become a meme. Even the party name—“Lasting Period”—is cringey (one user joked it sounds like “a woman’s nightmare”).
But here’s the kicker: Mikata knows it’s generic. It doesn’t pretend to be high art. It’s the anime equivalent of a fast-food burger—you know it’s not good for you, but sometimes you crave it. The fight scenes are fun, Yorha is likable, and there’s a weird charm to how unapologetically cliche it is. “I’m a sucker for revenge/redemption stories,” one user admitted. “I’ll keep watching if I like the character design or there are hot chicks.” Relatable.
So, should you watch it? If you’re 20 or under and love fantasy anime, sure. It’s easy to digest, has cool magic, and the “MC gets strong and rubs it in his old party’s face” payoff is coming (you know it is). But if you’re tired of the same old tropes? Skip it. As one user said, “I lost all interest when I realized it’s another ‘kicked from party’ story.”
At the end of the day, Mikata is a 5/10. It’s not great, it’s not terrible—it’s just… there. But hey, sometimes “there” is enough. As long as you don’t go in expecting a masterpiece, you might just have fun. And who knows? Maybe the next episode will surprise us. (Probably not, but let’s be optimistic.)
Final thought from a fan: “I’ll wait for ep 2-3, then decide whether to drop.” Same. Let’s see if Mikata can rise above its cliches—or if it’s just another forgettable fantasy show.
